The pool
Why this pool made the list
At 1,600 m on the Monte Pana plateau, the indoor pool is heated and open all year, with the Sassolungo filling a wall of windows: in winter you swim with snow on the other side of the glass. It's free for guests and open daily from 07:00 to 20:00, and a separate indoor children's pool next to it has toys and room to splash. Both take all ages.
Outside, warm-water whirlpools sit in the snow facing the peaks, but those, the saunas and the Turkish bath are for guests of 16 and over, so families split up: parents to the whirlpool, children to their own pool. Worth knowing: there's no outdoor swimming pool, so the indoor one carries the whole stay, which in ski season at the foot of the Sassolungo is exactly what you want.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Monte Pana Dolomites Hotel stands on the Monte Pana plateau above Santa Cristina, between 1,600 and 1,800 m, directly below the Sassolungo. In winter you ski in and out: the beginner lifts Parallel, Puntea, Cendevaves and Tschucky are at the hotel, the Mont de Sëura chairlift climbs to 2,040 m towards the Sellaronda, and the Santa Cristina ski school has its office inside. Cross-country trails and summer hiking paths start at the door, and the Puez-Geisler nature park is 8 km away.
The building is a 115-year-old alpine house: rooms have carpeted floors and wood furnishings, with Sassolungo views from the superior rooms and suites. Breakfast is a sweet and savoury buffet, the restaurant serves regional and international dishes, and half board is available. Children get a Mini Club from age 4, a playroom, ponies, mini golf and a 2.6 km woodland adventure trail.
Worth knowing: the village is 2 km down the road and no bus comes up to the hotel, so it's a taxi or the chairlift from Santa Cristina, and children from 3 count as adults on the booking. Pets are welcome on request for a charge, but not in the spa or restaurant. The hotel runs in seasons, so check the dates for an autumn trip.

Questions people ask
Is the pool heated?
Yes: the indoor pool is heated, open all year and free for guests, from 07:00 to 20:00 daily.
Is there an outdoor pool?
No: outdoors there are warm-water whirlpools, reserved for guests aged 16 and over.
Can children use the pool and spa?
The indoor pool and the children's pool have no age limit. The saunas, Turkish bath and outdoor whirlpools are for 16 and over.
Is it really ski-in ski-out?
Yes: the slopes and beginner lifts are at the hotel, and the Mont de Sëura chairlift links towards the Sellaronda when snow and lifts allow.
Arched windows and white columns line Kastel's indoor pool, with a painted mural running the length of one wall. The water is kept at about 30°C, there's a water jet and a whirlpool at the edge, and the pool is open all year. Children get two adventure pools of their own, with pool toys and a water slide.
The outdoor pool sits on the spa terrace above San Candido, heated to 31°C and open all year, with the jagged Baranci group rising directly behind it. In winter the water steams against the snow and the village lies below you; in summer the deck around it fills with loungers. Inside the spa there's an indoor pool as well, for a swim whatever the weather is doing.
Twelve metres above the meadow, the Sky Pool at Hotel Hubertus juts out from the hillside like a wing: a 25-metre infinity pool with a glass front onto the Pusteria valley and a window set into its floor, so you can look straight down at the grass below. It's heated to 33°C all year round and open from 7:00 to 19:30, and on a cold morning the steam lifts off the water against the Dolomites.
