Gran Canaria's south coast, from San Agustín through Maspalomas and Meloneras to Puerto de Mogán, is lined with hotels and apartment complexes built around their pools. In winter the numbers explain why heating matters. The AEMET station at Gran Canaria airport records an average January high of 21°C, with nights dropping to about 15°C, and the sea off Maspalomas sits around 19-20°C from January to April. Lovely for a walk on the dunes, brisk for a long swim.
Every stay we add here needs a pool at the property and a Booking.com rating of 8.0 or more from at least 50 guests. For the winter months we look for pools that are confirmed as heated or open all year, and each stay page says which pool that applies to. Expect a mix: big resorts with several pools, adults-only hotels, and smaller bungalow and apartment complexes around Playa del Inglés and Puerto Rico.
Worth knowing: the climate figures come from the airport on the east coast, not from the resorts themselves, so treat them as a guide. Heating is also often confirmed for the main pool only. If a children's pool or a rooftop pool matters to you in January, ask the hotel before you book.

Behind a white single-storey house in Ingenio, the garden is yours alone: a private saltwater pool, heated and open all year, set into a green lawn with the hills in view beyond the fence. Steps lead down into the water at one end, and after dark the underwater lights turn the tiles a bright turquoise.
The main pool is a big freshwater lagoon that curves through a garden of tall palms, heated through the cooler months. Alongside it sit two smaller adults-only pools in the spa: a 30°C saltwater pool with underwater massage jets and a brine pool kept at 30 to 33°C all year, with a hot tub corner. Children get their own pair: a shallow baby pool and a kids' pool with a slide, both heated.
Think small and personal: one kidney-shaped pool sits at the heart of this eight-room hotel, with the guest buildings close around it. The water is heated saltwater and the pool is open all year, with a shallow end for easing in. Palms and potted plants soften the edges, and after dark underwater lights turn it a deep blue.
Two infinity pools sit at the sea end of the garden, their edges lined up with the Atlantic and their shallow ledges set with submerged loungers. Both are for adults only. Further back are three more outdoor pools, one with a curved shallow shelf, plus a children's pool, six in all, and the pools are heated in winter.
Ten suites line up along one long, narrow pool here, and the ground-floor terraces open almost straight onto it. The water is heated saltwater and the pool stays open all year, so a January swim in Maspalomas is part of the deal. Grey daybeds sit right at the edge, palms lean over a curved stone wall, and an outdoor rain shower waits in a timber alcove beside the water.
Stone terraces step down the cliff above Amadores Bay, and on one of them an infinity pool runs straight out towards the Atlantic. It's one of two adult pools, and the one that can be heated. Two freshwater children's pools sit on the terraces too, and a round whirlpool hides below the red rock of the cliff.
Water runs right through Lopesan Baobab's tropical garden. Nine pools wind past palms, rock grottoes and wooden footbridges, two of them for children, and the biggest, Río & Mungo, covers more than 2,000 m². The kids' pool has a water slide and a shallow end, and the heated pool stays open all year, which counts in a Gran Canaria winter.
High on the hillside above Puerto Rico, the rooftop pool's infinity edge lines up with the Atlantic, and from the loungers you look straight down on the marina and the bay. Water spouts pour from the stone wall at the back into the pool. It's heated and open all year, with a pool bar for drinks and light lunches.
Two outdoor pools sit in the palm garden between the resort and the sea near Arguineguín: a large free-form freshwater pool and, right beside it, a smaller saltwater pool that's heated and open all year. A shallow end makes easing in simple, and children get their own pool area.
Built into the volcanic cliff at Agaete, the hotel steps down in white terraces to two outdoor pools. The long one runs in front of the room blocks with the Atlantic just past the glass railing; the second, curved pool comes with its own round hot tub. There's a heated pool open all year, so a winter swim is on the cards.
Every villa at Opal has its own pool, curved into a lawn right in front of floor-to-ceiling glass, so from the water you look straight back into the living room. Pale stone edges the pool, the villas are faced in dark volcanic stone and orange render, and bare hills rise behind the garden walls.
Six outdoor pools spread through the gardens of this resort by the sea in Meloneras. The one to find first is the infinity pool, its edge running out towards the Atlantic. Elsewhere there's a large lagoon-style main pool below the resort's twin church towers, a saltwater pool, a plunge pool and a kids' pool, plus a sandy beach area set among the palms.
The pool at El Palmital curves across a green lawn, with a shallow, beach-style edge that slopes gently into the water under tall palms. It's heated and open all year, which is exactly what you want from a Gran Canaria winter, and the low white bungalows with their red-tiled roofs sit close around it. A sunken seating area is set into the grass beside the water.
From November to mid-April, the three outdoor pools at Sunprime Atlantic View are heated to around 25°C, and they stay open all year. Together they add up to more than 700 m² of water, at 222, 239 and 289 m², set in a palm garden below the white suite blocks. Some pools have wide walk-in steps, and the Prime Pool Suites open straight onto the water.
The main pool is a proper 25-metre one: 25 by 17 metres, heated to 28°C and open from 07:00 to 20:00, with a roped swimming lane along one side and a sloping, wheelchair-accessible entry. Palms and low white bungalows frame it on every side. A second, 14-metre pool sits in the outdoor Zen Spa, kept at 35°C, with jets and waterfalls.
Palm Oasis is built around water. Two outdoor pools wind through a tropical garden of palms and volcanic rock, with waterfalls, hot tubs tucked into the rocks and a slide for the kids. The pools are heated in winter, the main one is open all year with a shallow end for easing in, and there's a separate children's pool.
