Every villa at Opal has its own pool, curved into a lawn right in front of floor-to-ceiling glass, so from the water you look straight back into the living room. Pale stone edges the pool, the villas are faced in dark volcanic stone and orange render, and bare hills rise behind the garden walls.
The pool is open all year. Here's the thing: it isn't heated as standard, but heating can be added for an extra daily charge, which is worth asking about if you're coming in winter. Loungers sit on the terrace and a dining table stands on the deck beside the water. Indoors, each villa also has its own jacuzzi, and since the pool belongs to your villa alone, there's no one else to share it with.

The stay
Opal is a group of detached villas inside the Anfi Tauro complex in Mogán, in Gran Canaria's south-west, less than 1 km from the Atlantic. Playa de Tauro is about 1.7 km away and Amadores beach about 2.4 km, while the resort of Puerto Rico is around 1 km off. The airport is roughly 40 minutes by car, and parking on site is free.
The villas come with two or three bedrooms, all en suite, around a large open-plan living room and a kitchen with a dishwasher, oven and fridge-freezer. Each has air conditioning, a private terrace and its own garden. The complex includes an 18-hole championship golf course with discounted green fees for guests, a minimarket, and massages on request.
Worth knowing: check-out is at 10:00, and if you arrive after 17:00 or at the weekend, you collect your keys at the Anfi Emerald Club hotel instead.
