Lanzarote is the driest of the Canary Islands, and its pool stays follow the coast: low whitewashed apartment complexes around Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise, resort hotels along the south, and a long list of villas with their own pools in and around Playa Blanca. In winter the numbers explain why heating matters. The AEMET station at Lanzarote airport records an average January high of about 21°C with nights near 14°C, and the sea off Puerto del Carmen drops to around 18°C in February and March. Lovely in the sun, cool for a long swim, especially once the trade wind picks up.

Every stay we add here needs a pool at the property and a Booking.com rating of 8.0 or more from at least 50 guests. From October to February we look for pools confirmed as heated or open all year, and each stay page says which pool that applies to. Here's the thing with villas: a private pool is not automatically a heated one. If a warm pool is the point of your trip, look for heating in the listing, and read what we could confirm on the stay page.

Worth knowing: the airport sits on the east coast near Arrecife, so treat the climate figures as a guide for the resorts. Rain is rare, about 111 mm a year at the same station, most of it between November and February.

Two long outdoor pools run down the middle of the hotel between rows of palms and white loungers, with the sea at the far end and the low white wings of the building on either side. One of them has an infinity edge, and the main pool stays open all year. Indoors, the wellness centre has a third pool: a heated pool under a blue-lit vaulted ceiling, with a sauna, a steam bath and sensation showers around it.

Two small heated pools sit on the terraces between the white bungalows, both looking straight out over the Atlantic. Each villa has its own outdoor pool, set into a lawn edged with flowering shrubs and a paved terrace. There's a shallow end for easing in, an outdoor shower beside the water, and the pool is open all year. Climb the outside stairs to the roof terrace and you look out towards the islands of Lobos and Fuerteventura.

The beach is right there: Lava Beach sits on the promenade above Matagorda's dark volcanic sand, and its two freshwater pools curve between palms and white loungers just back from the sea. Both are heated all year, usually to around 26°C, and there's a shallow kids' pool beside them. Water massage loungers line part of the edge.

Up on the hill above Puerto del Carmen, the pool terrace looks out past palms to the Atlantic. The main outdoor pool is open all year and heated in winter, and a small dynamic pool beside it adds a little waterfall and hydromassage jets, heated through the cooler months too.
