The pool
Why this pool made the list
Two small heated pools sit on the terraces between the white bungalows, both looking straight out over the Atlantic. The main pool is for adults; right beside it is a smaller children's pool with a shallow end and a planted island in the middle. Both are open all year, so a winter swim is on the cards too.
With no bar or restaurant on site, the pool terrace stays quiet: just loungers, yellow umbrellas, palms and the sea just below the wall, with a strip of sand and volcanic rock at the bottom of the garden. It suits couples and families who like a calm swim, then a walk along the promenade into town.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Bungalows Velázquez is a small complex of around 32 white bungalows on Avenida de las Playas in Puerto del Carmen, five minutes' walk from Playa Grande. Shops, bars and restaurants are all within walking distance, and Lanzarote Airport is 15 km away.
The bungalows have one or two bedrooms, a kitchenette with a microwave, fridge and kettle, and a lounge with a sofa and flat-screen TV. Each opens onto a furnished terrace, and some look straight out to sea. It's self-catering, with no restaurant on site, so the town's cafés do breakfast duty if you'd rather not cook.
Worth knowing: there are a lot of steps down from the street, so it's not ideal with a pushchair or limited mobility. There's no on-site parking either; free public parking is nearby, but spaces can be hard to find.

Questions people ask
Are the pools heated in winter?
Yes: both pools are heated and open all year.
Is there a pool for children?
Yes: a smaller kids' pool with a shallow end sits right beside the main pool, which is for adults.
Is it accessible?
There are many steps down from the street, so it's not a good fit for pushchairs or guests with limited mobility.
The beach is right there: Lava Beach sits on the promenade above Matagorda's dark volcanic sand, and its two freshwater pools curve between palms and white loungers just back from the sea. Both are heated all year, usually to around 26°C, and there's a shallow kids' pool beside them. Water massage loungers line part of the edge.
Palms and rows of grey loungers frame every pool at SENTIDO Aequora, and there are four of them between the low white blocks, the main ones heated. The main pool has a shallow end and a pool bar and stays open all year. One pool is kept for adults as a quiet relaxation pool, while children get their own pool with a slide next to a splash park full of water buckets and spouts.
The villa's private pool runs along a pale deck beside the white pergola, with a wall of dark lava stone closing off the garden behind it and the volcanic hills around Yaiza rising beyond. It's a saltwater pool, heated and open all year, and it has its own cover.
