Tenerife is a popular place to swim outdoors in winter, and the numbers show why it needs a heated pool. At Tenerife Sur airport the average January high is 22°C, and the sea off Costa Adeje sits around 20°C: lovely on the beach, cold for a proper swim. A heated pool is what turns a winter morning in the water from a dare into a habit.

Every stay we list has a heated pool that is open all year. Most are in the south, in Costa Adeje and Playa de las Américas, a short walk from the sea. The exception is the Hotel Botánico in Puerto de la Cruz on the north coast, which has palm gardens, views of Mount Teide and a large spa.

Worth knowing: heating is often confirmed for one pool and not the others. At some stays the kids' pool, the rooftop infinity pool or a suite's private pool is not confirmed as heated, so each stay page says which pool is which. If a particular one matters for January, ask the hotel before you book.

High on the hillside at Los Gigantes, the pools look the same way the apartments do: along the dark cliffs of the Acantilado and out over the Atlantic towards La Gomera. There are two, a main pool curving between the sun terraces and the Oasis pool bar, and a children's pool linked to it by a waterfall. Both are outdoors, open all year and free for guests, with the water heated for the winter months.

Seen from the loungers, the main pool seems to pour straight into the Atlantic: it's an infinity pool with palms along its curving edge, heated and open all year.
