The pool
Why this pool made the list
An 80-metre river pool winds between the River Villas at Royal River, under palms, and each of those villas opens from its own pool into it. The Pool and Grand Pool Villas have a private pool on the terrace instead, and the Lagoon Villas stand on stilts over a lake with direct access to the lagoon pool. Shared pools add to that: a rooftop infinity pool looking across the golf course to the Atlantic, and a main pool below. All outdoors, open all year and included in your stay.
Loungers, umbrellas and towels are set out, there's a pool bar, and a barbecue is laid around the main pool on Thursdays. Brunch can arrive on a floating tray in your villa pool. Worth knowing: the pools are heated, but no water temperature is published, so ask before booking if a warm January swim is the whole point. Adults only, from 14.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Royal River is a five-star, adults-only hotel of around 50 villas on Calle Alcojora in Costa Adeje, directly opposite the Golf Costa Adeje course, with the Atlantic beyond the fairways. Playa de Fañabé is 2.7 km away and Tenerife South airport about 25 km; parking on site is free and there's a paid airport shuttle.
The villas come with one, two or three bedrooms, several spread over two levels, with king-size beds, a bath and a separate shower, a kitchen with microwave and fridge, and a terrace with hammocks and a cocoon bed. Four restaurants and three bars cover the day: Pineapple for breakfast through dinner, Kokoro for Asian cuisine, Flamingo with an Italian tasting menu on Mondays, and The Top Brasserie on the roof, closed on Mondays and Thursdays. The Serenity Spa has a hammam, sauna, steam room and hot tub, with Alqvimia treatments.
Here's the thing: this is a golf-course address, not a beach one. The sea is a drive away, and the villa and its pool are the point.

Questions people ask
Are the pools heated?
Yes, heated and open all year, though no water temperature is published and the hotel doesn't say which pools are heated: if a warm winter swim in your own villa pool is the point, ask before booking.
Does every villa have its own pool?
Every villa has a private pool or plunge pool: the River Villas' pools open into the 80-metre river pool, the Pool and Grand Pool Villas have one on the terrace, and the Lagoon Villas have direct access to the lagoon pool.
Can children stay?
No: Royal River is adults only, with a minimum age of 14.
Every one of the 28 villas has its own heated pool on a private terrace, and from the water you look across the Costa Adeje golf course to the Atlantic. Several pools run to an infinity edge above the fairways; others sit beside a Balinese-style gazebo or a canopied daybed. They're open all year and included in the stay.
The Atlantic fills the view from the rooftop infinity pool at Royal Hideaway, its edge lining up with the sea, with daybeds set on platforms in the water and a timber deck all around. Below, in front of the white terraced facade, the main outdoor pool sits among lawns. Both outdoor pools are saltwater, heated and open all year, with loungers, umbrellas, and pool and beach towels.
Four outdoor pools wind through palms and dark volcanic rock here, and the one to head for is the main infinity pool: saltwater, heated and open all year, its edge running out towards the Atlantic. It has a shallow end, a pool bar within reach and pool toys for younger swimmers. Around it sit a kids' pool with a plunge pool, a third pool for all ages, a fourth with set opening times and a water slide.
