The pool

Why this pool made the list

High on the hillside at Los Gigantes, the pools look the same way the apartments do: along the dark cliffs of the Acantilado and out over the Atlantic towards La Gomera. There are two, a main pool curving between the sun terraces and the Oasis pool bar, and a children's pool linked to it by a waterfall. Both are outdoors, open all year and free for guests, with the water heated for the winter months.

Loungers, umbrellas and pool towels are laid out on the terraces, and the bar keeps you fed without a trip back to the apartment. Here's the thing: heating is confirmed, but no temperature is published and the resort doesn't say whether the children's pool is heated too, so ask before you book if a warm winter swim is the point of the trip. Quiet hours run from 23:00 to 08:00.

The stay

Beyond the pool

From the hillside above Los Gigantes, on Tenerife's west coast, Royal Sun Resort looks along the cliffs of the Acantilado where they drop into the sea. It's an aparthotel of about 120 apartments. The one, two and three-bedroom apartments are spread over six floors, each with a furnished terrace and most with sea views; inside you get a lounge with sofas, a kitchen with oven, microwave and dishwasher, and a walk-in shower. Some apartments add a private hot tub on the terrace.

Los Gigantes harbour and Puerto de Santiago are both about 1.5 km away, and Tenerife South airport around 34 km. Worth knowing: the resort sits on a steep hill, so the walk back up from the village is a climb; there's a shuttle service, an airport shuttle and car hire at reception.

There are two restaurants, the Regency buffet and the à la carte Aqua, plus the Imperial bar with evening shows, a gym and a squash court. Parking is in a garage for a daily fee, with EV charging, and pets aren't accepted.
