Why this pool made the list

The best of the four pools is out at the tip of the peninsula: a two-level saltwater pool with the sea on three sides, a children's section on the lower level and nothing but the bay of Agia Pelagia from the water. The main pool sits higher up between the restaurant and the snack bar, with a 270-degree sea view.

The main pool is the lively one, with music, water gym and water polo, while the saltwater pool is calmer. Children aged 4 to 12 have their own mini pool with two small slides. For cooler days in spring and autumn there's a heated indoor pool beside the spa, under a retractable roof, kept as a quiet zone.

The stay

Beyond the pool

Peninsula Resort & Spa covers its own small headland between the bays of Mononaftis and Psaromoura, on Crete's north coast, 25 km from Heraklion. A lift through a cave passage takes you down to Mononaftis beach, mostly pebbles with sandy patches, tavernas and a diving centre, and the resort has its own swimming platform with a beach bar at Tsimento.

Rooms are bright and white, many with balconies over the sea. The resort runs on an all-inclusive plan, with a buffet restaurant looking out to Dia island and four bars. There are two tennis courts, a kids' club and evening entertainment until 23:00.

Worth knowing: there are no lifeguards at the pools or beaches, and sunbeds on the public beaches cost a little extra. The bus stop is right outside.
