The pool
Why this pool made the list
Kronplatz fills the view from the rooftop infinity pool, and the gondola up the mountain starts less than 100 metres from the door. It's heated and open all year, so it works as well on a summer afternoon as after a winter day on the slopes. The second pool is a 25-metre sports pool, made for proper lengths.
The rooftop is the grown-up corner of the hotel: the pool is adults only, and swimwear is optional up there. The other pool welcomes all ages. Both pools open from 9:00 to 20:00, and around them the spa covers about 1,400 m², with a bio sauna, a hammam and an outdoor Finnish sauna facing the mountains. A spa bag with a bathrobe, pool towels and slippers is yours for the whole stay.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Falkensteiner Hotel Kronplatz stands in Riscone, right at the foot of Kronplatz: the Plan de Corones gondola is less than 100 metres away, so in winter you're on the slopes in minutes. Brunico's centre is about 3 km down the road, and Cortina d'Ampezzo is an hour's drive.
The building is all pale timber and glass, and the rooms follow the same calm palette, each with a desk and a dressing room. Breakfast is a buffet, the restaurant cooks in an open kitchen, and there's a bar for the evening. Beyond the spa you'll find a gym, an indoor climbing wall and a children's playroom, and parking is free.
Worth knowing: families are welcome, but the rooftop pool and the saunas are kept for adults, so children swim in the other pool. Pets come on request.

Questions people ask
Is the rooftop pool heated in winter?
Yes: it's heated and open all year, from 9:00 to 20:00.
Can children use the pools?
Children of any age are welcome at the hotel. The rooftop pool is adults only, and the other pool is open to all ages.
How far is the ski lift?
The Plan de Corones gondola is less than 100 metres from the hotel.
Twelve metres above the meadow, the Sky Pool at Hotel Hubertus juts out from the hillside like a wing: a 25-metre infinity pool with a glass front onto the Pusteria valley and a window set into its floor, so you can look straight down at the grass below. It's heated to 33°C all year round and open from 7:00 to 19:30, and on a cold morning the steam lifts off the water against the Dolomites.
Gran Tubla's heated pool runs from inside to out. The indoor half sits under a ceiling of hanging wooden slats, with loungers along a wall of glass, then the water carries on past a glass partition to an outdoor section on a timber deck, finished with an infinity edge. From there the view opens over Ortisei to the Sella group and Sassolungo. It's open all year, from 09:00 to 20:00.
Up on the roof of La Cort's spa, the infinity pool's glass edge drops away to the meadows and villages of Val Gardena, with the valley town below and peaks lined up beyond. It's outdoors, heated and open all year, so the view swaps green summer slopes for snow while the swim stays the same.
