The pool
Why this pool made the list
Up on the roof of La Cort's spa, the infinity pool's glass edge drops away to the meadows and villages of Val Gardena, with the valley town below and peaks lined up beyond. It's outdoors, heated and open all year, so the view swaps green summer slopes for snow while the swim stays the same.
The Rooftop SPA around the pool has three saunas, a steam room, a hammam and an open-air bath, with loungers and towels ready on the deck and free swimming within set opening times. With adults only and a minimum check-in age of 18, it's a pool for grown-ups: a swim before breakfast, then the saunas after a day on the Ortisei cable cars.

The stay
Beyond the pool
La Cort sits in the Val Gardena countryside, 3 km and a five-minute drive from Ortisei and the first cable cars. Bolzano is 40 minutes away by car.
Rooms have parquet floors, heating, a private bathroom, satellite TV and a fridge, and some come with a balcony or patio. Breakfast is a rich buffet with home-made bread and jams, fresh fruit, cold cuts, eggs, almonds and nuts, and the cafe serves home-made cakes alongside an honesty bar. There's a small fitness room too.
Worth knowing: there's no restaurant, so dinner means the short drive into Ortisei. Parking is free on site, and children and pets aren't allowed.

Questions people ask
Is the pool heated?
Yes: the rooftop infinity pool is heated.
Is the pool open in winter?
Yes: it is open all year, within set opening times, so check the hours when you arrive.
Can children stay?
No: children are not allowed and the minimum age for check-in is 18.
An 11 by 4.5 metre outdoor pool sits on the lawn below the hotel, and from the water the view runs straight across the meadows to the Sciliar. It's heated all year: about 29°C in summer and 33°C in winter, when steam lifts off the surface and the garden around it is under snow. A cover keeps the heat in overnight.
Kronplatz fills the view from the rooftop infinity pool, and the gondola up the mountain starts less than 100 metres from the door. It's heated and open all year, so it works as well on a summer afternoon as after a winter day on the slopes. The second pool is a 25-metre sports pool, made for proper lengths.
Twelve metres above the meadow, the Sky Pool at Hotel Hubertus juts out from the hillside like a wing: a 25-metre infinity pool with a glass front onto the Pusteria valley and a window set into its floor, so you can look straight down at the grass below. It's heated to 33°C all year round and open from 7:00 to 19:30, and on a cold morning the steam lifts off the water against the Dolomites.
