The pool
Why this pool made the list
An 11 by 4.5 metre outdoor pool sits on the lawn below the hotel, and from the water the view runs straight across the meadows to the Sciliar. It's heated all year: about 29°C in summer and 33°C in winter, when steam lifts off the surface and the garden around it is under snow. A cover keeps the heat in overnight.
Sun loungers and umbrellas are set out on the grass, towels are provided, and in summer a waiter brings drinks and snacks to the pool. Hours run 08:00 to 20:30 in summer and from 14:00 in winter, so plan a winter swim for after the slopes rather than before. The relaxation room beside it looks out at the pool through a wall of glass, and the hotel is adults only, from 16, which keeps the water quiet.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Sonus Alpis is a family-run, adults-only hotel in San Valentino, on a sunny slope below the Alpe di Siusi and about 2 km from the centre of Castelrotto. The rooms, suites and apartments are named after local birds and fitted out in local woods, including spruce sound wood from the Alpe di Siusi, and run from a 20 m² double room to a 75 m² apartment for four, each with a balcony facing the mountains or the garden. There's no air conditioning, which some summer guests notice.
Music is the theme: a lounge bar with panoramic windows and a grand piano, a music library, and bird song in the suites. Breakfast is a buffet and the Saporis restaurant serves dinner. The wellness area has a Finnish sauna, an organic sauna, a steam bath and a panorama sauna in stone pine, plus a fitness room.
A free shuttle to the Ortisei and Alpe di Siusi cable cars, about 10 minutes' drive, stops in front of the hotel; in winter they link into 181 km of slopes. Parking and the garage are free, with EV charging, and dogs are accepted on request in selected rooms.

Up on the roof of La Cort's spa, the infinity pool's glass edge drops away to the meadows and villages of Val Gardena, with the valley town below and peaks lined up beyond. It's outdoors, heated and open all year, so the view swaps green summer slopes for snow while the swim stays the same.
Behind the walls of a 12th-century castle, the outdoor pool sits in an old botanic garden, with the castle on one side and the mountains around Merano beyond the trees. A whirlpool bench at one end gives you a bubble bath in the open air. It's a summer pool, open from May to September: in the colder months the swimming moves indoors.
Arched windows and white columns line Kastel's indoor pool, with a painted mural running the length of one wall. The water is kept at about 30°C, there's a water jet and a whirlpool at the edge, and the pool is open all year. Children get two adventure pools of their own, with pool toys and a water slide.
