The pool
Why this pool made the list
Behind the walls of a 12th-century castle, the outdoor pool sits in an old botanic garden, with the castle on one side and the mountains around Merano beyond the trees. A whirlpool bench at one end gives you a bubble bath in the open air. It's a summer pool, open from May to September: in the colder months the swimming moves indoors.
The heated indoor pool is the one that stays open all year, from 7:00 to 20:00, under tall arched windows with loungers along the wall. The sauna and steam bath open in the late afternoon, from 16:00 to 19:00, so on a winter day you can swim in the morning and save the heat for before dinner. The whole castle is adults only.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Castel Rundegg is a castle hotel in the spa town of Merano, dating back to the 12th century and about a 10-minute walk from the town centre. You can leave the car parked: the centre is close enough to walk to for dinner or a stroll.
Rooms are classic and a little ornate, with carved wooden furniture, heavy curtains and patterned rugs; every one has a minibar and a private bathroom. Dinner is served under the vaulted stone ceilings of the old castle, with local specialities and vegetarian and gluten-free options. The Health & Beauty Farm adds a gym, a Turkish bath, a Finnish sauna and a long list of massages and treatments.
Parking on site is free, bikes are available to rent, and there's a golf course within 3 km. Worth knowing: check-out is at 10:30, earlier than most, and pets come on request only.

Can children stay?
No: the hotel is adults only and children aren't accepted.
When is the sauna open?
The sauna and steam bath open from 16:00 to 19:00.
An 11 by 4.5 metre outdoor pool sits on the lawn below the hotel, and from the water the view runs straight across the meadows to the Sciliar. It's heated all year: about 29°C in summer and 33°C in winter, when steam lifts off the surface and the garden around it is under snow. A cover keeps the heat in overnight.
Arched windows and white columns line Kastel's indoor pool, with a painted mural running the length of one wall. The water is kept at about 30°C, there's a water jet and a whirlpool at the edge, and the pool is open all year. Children get two adventure pools of their own, with pool toys and a water slide.
At 1,600 m on the Monte Pana plateau, the indoor pool is heated and open all year, with the Sassolungo filling a wall of windows: in winter you swim with snow on the other side of the glass. It's free for guests and open daily from 07:00 to 20:00, and a separate indoor children's pool next to it has toys and room to splash. Both take all ages.
