Why this pool made the list

The main pool sits on a stone-paved terrace with the garden's trees around it and the bay and mountains across the water. It has a shallow end for easing in, and a separate children's pool gives younger swimmers a space of their own. Both are outdoors, and the main pool opens in season.

Sun loungers and umbrellas line the terrace, there are pool toys for the kids, and the sea itself is only 50 metres away when you'd rather swim in salt water. Because the bungalows are self-catering, the day runs at your pace: coffee on your balcony, a swim, lunch from your own kitchenette. Here's the thing: this is a summer pool, so plan it for the warm months.

Beyond the pool

The sea is 50 metres from the door at Villas Vista Del Mar, a family-run group of bungalows on the edge of Kissamos, in northwest Crete. The town centre, with its tavernas and café bars, is 1.5 km away, and the beach at Falassarna is about a 20-minute drive.

Each air-conditioned bungalow has a separate bedroom with a double bed, a living area with two single beds, a kitchenette with a fridge and microwave, and a furnished balcony looking over the sea. Most have their own washing machine, and the rest get free laundry service. Units are cleaned daily except Sundays.

There's a garden full of trees and plants, a barbecue, free private parking, and the staff can arrange car hire. Worth knowing: there are no extra beds, so check the unit fits your group before you book.
