The pool
Why this pool made the list
From the deck you look straight out over green slopes to the Cretan Sea. Each stone villa here has its own outdoor pool, fenced, with a shallow end and a long lounging terrace alongside. The pool is heated and open all year: the heating lifts the water 6 to 8 degrees above the day's average air temperature, up to 29°C.
Sun loungers, umbrellas and pool towels are part of the villa, and the covered dining table sits a few steps from the water, so lunch and a swim run into each other. The fence and shallow end make it an easy pool for families with small children. Worth knowing: in midwinter the water stays well below that 29°C ceiling, so a January swim will be bracing rather than warm.

The stay
Beyond the pool
Vista Mare Villas is a small group of stone villas in Dramia, a village among olive groves just outside Georgioupoli on Crete's north coast. Peristeras Beach is 2.8 km away, Georgioupoli about 4 km, and Chania airport 53 km, so a car makes life easier: car hire and an airport shuttle can be arranged.
The villas are detached, with air conditioning, open-plan living rooms under timber ceilings, glass doors onto the terrace and a full kitchen with dishwasher, oven and washing machine. Outside there's a barbecue, a garden and free private parking.
Children of any age are welcome and cots are free on request, though there are no extra beds. Worth knowing: check-in runs from 16:00, and cash isn't accepted.

Questions people ask
Is the pool private?
Yes: each villa has its own outdoor pool, with a fence and a shallow end.
Is the pool heated in winter?
Yes, it's heated and open all year, warming the water 6 to 8 degrees above the average air temperature up to 29°C, so winter swims are cool rather than warm.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes: children of any age are welcome, cots are free on request, and the pool is fenced.
High on a hillside near Kissamos, each of the three white villas here has its own outdoor pool, set into a pale stone deck with a glass balustrade on the open side. From the water you look across green hillsides down to the sea. The pool is fenced and opens for the warm season.
Every room here has its own pool, set into a furnished terrace, and from the sea-view suites you look out over the rooftops of Chania towards the sea. It's water a few steps from your bed, for a morning dip or a swim after dark. Down in the spa there's a second option: a heated indoor saltwater pool with water cascades, beside a large jacuzzi.
The main pool sits on a stone-paved terrace with the garden's trees around it and the bay and mountains across the water. It has a shallow end for easing in, and a separate children's pool gives younger swimmers a space of their own. Both are outdoors, and the main pool opens in season.
